Why such a huge price difference for the very same camera body?

I am looking for a Nikon D300 camera. I have found a price variance for the exact same camera of about $1300, well under $1000 and well over $2000, no accessories, no difference. Why such a huge price difference, and how can you be sure you are not falling for an internet scam? I am talking about the camera body only.
