Will a DSLR take better pictures?
I currently have a 6.1 megapixel Kodak point and shoot camera. I think I’m ready to step up to DSLR with the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT. I’m going to buy the kit for the time being, and then shop around for lenses when I can afford it. For the time being, even with the kit lens, can I expect better picture quality with the DSLR over the point and shoot?

Simply buying a DSLR will not improve your skills as a photographer.

With its much larger sensor and higher quality lenses a DSLR will definitely give better picture quality. The ability to change lenses will allow your creativity to expand as you learn and grow.
A DSLR will give you the opportunity to make better pictures IF you learn how to use it. You are going to have to spend time to READ & STUDY the Owner’s Manual for the camera. Taking a couple of photography classes would be the best way to learn about light and composition and f-stops and shutter speeds and ISO – elements all critical to good photography.
If classes aren’t possible, you can still learn the aforementioned elements on your own. These books will help:
“Understanding Exposure” and “Understanding Shutter Speed”, both by Bryan Peterson.
“Digital SLR Handbook” by John Freeman
David Busch (http://www.dbusch.com) writes a Guide for the Canon XT which will be helpful.
“The Art of Digital Photography” by Joseph Meehan.

I also strongly suggest subscribing to at least one photography magazine. My personal favorite is Shutterbug but you should look at the ones at your library and decide for yourself.
