Lens Hood

Lens Hood

Following are five basic outdoor lighting scenarios, if used properly can result in great photographs.

1) Top-lighting.

This type of light is found mid-day around high noon. The overhead sun causes deep shadows under the eyes (racoon eyes) or harsh lighting on landscapes. It is best to avoid photographing at this time of the day, unless you use a fill flash to fill in the shadows.

2) Side-lighting

The sun is above horizon level but not yet straight above, so the light causes illumination on one side of the subject. This type of light can cause a dramatic look unless a reflector or fill flash is used to fill in the shadow side.

3) Front-lighting

Just as it sounds, the subject has sunlight in their face. This can cause a warm, golden look however most people squint with sun in their eyes. Best to avoid it. If you must, count to 3 and have subject look into the camera on the count of 3.

4) Back-lighting

Place the subject with the sun to their back in the early morning or late afternoon hours. You will immediately notice a beautiful lighting on the subjects hair. Because the subject’s face is in the shadow you will need to balance the photo with fill flash. (you may need a lens hood due to lens flare)

5) Shade

You can always play it safe in the shade. When the light on the subject matches the light in the background you are assured a well exposed and lit photograph.

The best time of the day for people or landscape photography is always in the morning before 10AM and in the afternoon after 4-5PM (depends on the time of the year). I have found 15 minutes before sunset to be the sweetest light.

By choosing the correct lighting and time of day you can transform a simple subject into a fascinating display of nature or a gorgeous portrait of your family!
